Obesity is one of the top five causes of premature death in England alongside smoking, poor diet, high blood pressure, and alcohol and drug use, FUTURE HEALTH Turning point: the case for new action in tackling obesity in England. The report also estimates that obesity and excess weight cost the NHS around £12 billion per year, with the total impact of these conditions on the economy and wider society in the UK equivalent to £126 billion. Unfortunately, obesity related costs are likely to continue to rise for the next decade.

With these glaring facts, it is expedient for the government and all stakeholders to address obesity with concerted efforts to avert the looming major impact on the UK economy. It is noteworthy to state that by nipping this in the bud, premature deaths linked to obesity would be avoided. The huge yearly health expenditure will be reduced drastically and the pressure on the NHS will be significantly reduced.

Furthermore, by significantly reducing obesity in the United Kingdom, we would be having healthier, more vibrant and happier workforce.

All these will significantly improve the productivity of the labour force and reduce wasted man-hour due to illness in all sectors of the UK economy. Medical practitioners in the UK will also be able to focus on other medical issues the population is facing.
